This holiday weekend has given us more time than usual to make some dinners with prep times longer than 30 minutes. This week I chose two dinners from Dinner: A Love Story (the book), one that is quick and easy and one that takes little more time.
The turkey chili we made last night was a slam dunk with my 7 year old. When I first said I was making chili earlier in the day, he said he didn't like chili and that it was too spicy. But from the moment I started to sauté the onions and garlic till I added the cinnamon at the end, he was orbiting around me asking when... when... when... could he finally taste what smelled so good. He ate two bowls of chili and declared this the best dinner he's ever had. A quick note, I only added 2 tablespoons of chili powder because I was worried the spice would turn off my kids. It worked great and I think I am going to slowly up the chili powder amount over time.
Sunday: DALS book selection recipe - Turkey chili with homemade cornbread muffins

Friday: Dinner out with friends
Saturday: TBD
I made the turkey chili and I enjoyed it, however my husband didn't really like it. I think it was the cinnamon that turned him off. I also used dark red kidney beans instead of black beans but over all I enjoyed it. I also made the apricot mustard chicken and we all loved it! I used drumsticks since that's what I had in the freezer and we all deemed this one a keeper! A nice little smiley face has gone beside this recipe in the book. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi there. I just found your blog on DALS (which I also just found!), and funny thing, I'm also a mom in San Francisco who recently started a blog with weekly dinner menus! This could either make us BFFs or enemies, not sure which, but I'm going with at least blog colleagues. Just wanted to introduce myself and say I like what you have done here!
ReplyDeleteHi Andi! Blog colleagues... Love it. I must admit that my postings have been rather erratic lately with work demands cutting into my blogging in the evenings.
DeleteBut I totally dig your blog and am seriously contemplating that taco salad one of these nights. I hope I see you around the hood sometime. It's a small city, after all!
